Origins
Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine, recognizes 3 basic life energies that permeate the human body and the entire universe. These energies, called doshas, are a combination of the 5 basic elements of nature – ether, air, fire, water and earth. According to Ayurveda, which believes in the confluence of all life, restoring the balance between these 3 doshas is the key to achieving health and harmony. Each person has one of the doshas as the dominant one, which influences their appearance, temperament and mental qualities.
Vata is the dosha of air and ether. It is the force responsible for movement in our body, meaning breathing, circulation or nervous system. People with a dominant Vata dosha have a penchant for creative activities, travel and meeting new people. When Vata is in balance, it promotes flexibility, originality, imagination and a general enthusiasm for life. Otherwise, it can lead to insomnia, anxiety, headaches, constipation and other problems related to the nervous system and movement.
Pitta is the dosha of fire and water. Pitta is commonly associated with fire and "that which poisons". It's responsible for digestion, metabolism and internal heat in the body. People with a dominant Pitta dosha love challenges are ambitious and pride themselves on courage and enthusiasm. They are natural leaders who learn new things easily and quickly, but this can make them impatient with those who do not possess these qualities. When in balance, the Pitta brings clarity of thought, purpose and determination. However, if out of balance, it can cause irritability, anger, inflammation, heartburn, diarrhea, or skin issues.
Kapha is the dosha of earth and water. Kapha translated means "that which unites things" or "that which holds things together". According to Ayurveda, this dosha is responsible for mental stability, body structure, endurance and strength. People with a dominant Kapha dosha are calm, patient and balanced. When Kapha is in balance, it promotes emotional calm and mental and physical resilience. Kapha-type people love routine, can empathize deeply, and be patient, compassionate and loyal. However, if there is an imbalance, it can lead to digestive problems, stress, foggy mind, water retention, poor mental health or respiratory problems.
