Origins
This herb, with its distinctive rose-like flowers, is mainly found in the Mediterranean. It is also known as the Mediterranean rock-rose or rockrose. However, because botanists recognize up to 200 species of the genus Cistus, you may also find it in North and South America.
The Latin name Cistus incanus flowers from June to September. Many gardeners have taken a liking to it because of its distinctive flowers with a strong scent. However, as it is not a hardy plant, it needs to be placed in a sheltered area for the winter.
The life cycle of the plant is very interesting. It requires a warm, open and sunny habitat. It can withstand summer heat and frequent fires or grazing. In addition, it lives in symbiosis with the rubroboletus rhodoxanthus and laccaria laccata mushrooms as well as hosting to a small parasitic plant, Cytinus hypocistis, which lives in its roots. Some species are essential food items for butterfly larvae. And selected species of cistus release essential oils into the air that make them capable of spontaneous combustion in dry, hot conditions.
Cistus leaves can be used to make tinctures.
