The little sister of the orange, originally from China, certainly does not put her relative to shame. On the contrary, with its health benefits, it bravely keeps up with other citrus fruits and even surpasses many of them in flavour.
The origin of the name of this fruit is a bit of a mystery. Some say it is based on the old name for Mauritius (Mandare), others suggest a connection with the mandarins, the Chinese high officials from whose country the tangerine originated.
Be that as it may, these fruits of the evergreen, not-very-tall tree are popular globally. The proof is in the widespread cultivation. From their homeland in China and Japan, they have gradually made their way west, not only to the Mediterranean but also to the UK and North America. In general, tangerine plantations can be found in almost all subtropical and tropical regions.
The bright orange fruit has holistic uses. The flesh can be squeezed for sweet juice or cut and dried. These pieces are then perfect for drinks and a variety of dishes. However, we must never forget the skin, which has many health and practical benefits.
As mentioned, tangerines are a rich source of vitamins (A, B and C) and beneficial substances for the body - magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorus, for instance.
