Benefits of pu erh
It is surprising how many variations of tea can be prepared from one Camellia Sinensis plant. Pu Erh is another of the many representatives of authentic teas and certainly does not put its cousins to shame in any way.
Pu Erh is unique. No other tea undergoes procedures like this one. The leaves of the tea plant are collected, left to dry freely in the sun and then undergo the entire fermentation process. The tea is then left to mature in a humid environment, a phase that can take months or decades. Therefore, it is not a surprise that the most mature Pu Erh sells for several thousand dollars.
Of course, Pu Erh also has many variations, so the length of fermentation varies for each, as does the stage at which the leaves are pressed into traditional cakes or pies. Either way, true Pu Erh originates only in the Chinese province of Yunnan, where its history is said to date back two thousand years.
The taste of Pu Erh depends on how long it has aged. It can be bitter and may not excite much in young teas. A good quality, well-aged tea, however, is a delicate affair. The tea tree takes in the aromas from its surroundings - you will notice the fruit flavours and earthiness in the delicious infusion. This pleasantly sweet combination, combined with the golden colour of the drink, makes for a refined experience.
Pu Erh contains caffeine and should not be served to young children. Pregnant and breastfeeding women ought to be cautious about it.
