Benefits of Lungworts
Lungworts does not play any game - its name already says what it is the best at.
Pulmonaria officinalis is an edible herb about 30 centimetres tall. Its leaves are covered with fine hairs and can be found in recipes for soups or light salads. However, it is the bicoloured flowers that are typical of pulmonaria. They start reddish-pink in colour, which slowly changes to a blue-purple shade.
This plant can be found in shady places across Europe, Asia, North America and also in parts of the African continent. It needs humus-rich soil, so it is most at home in forests and groves. However, if you have the right conditions, you can also grow this herb in your garden.
For health benefits, the flowering stem of the lungwort is mainly used. It is harvested from March to April and then dried at low temperatures without direct sunlight. A decoction of the stems can be drunk, but it is also useful in a bath or as a poultice. The recommended dose for ailments is two cups a day for up to three weeks. However, the consumption of lungworts is not suitable for young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
