Benefits of cherry
For some, the first tree climbed, for others, compote from grandma's pantry or a fragrant cake (Czech ''bublanina'') pulled out of the oven. Either way, cherries are an enticing harbinger of summer, and we have not even mentioned their benefits.
The delightful tree, native to Asia Minor, was widespread, especially in the days of ancient Rome. Today, the cherry tree can be found almost all over Europe and is also a popular feature in many gardens and parks here.
It blooms until about May and then from June to August, you can enjoy its sweet fruit, usually deep red. The cherries are heart-shaped and hide a rather large stone inside the juicy flesh. A single tree can produce up to an incredible 7,000 cherries. However, the fruit is very sensitive to weather conditions and also attracts pests, be they birds or insects.
They are rich in all sorts of vitamins and beneficial substances. Of particular note are calcium, potassium and the colouring agent anthocyanin, which has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity.
The fruit can be eaten raw, but you will find many varieties - from frozen or preserved to dried. Syrups and pieces of cherries are added to beverages to freshen the taste. Due to their very effective heat absorption, the pits are also used and put into sachets and applied to painful areas. Excessive consumption can lead to intestinal problems, but otherwise, there are no side effects to worry about.
