Benefits of Chaga
You may not be impressed by the look, but it has a wide range of uses. Growing mainly on birch and beech trees in the northern regions of Europe, Asia, the USA and Canada, the fungus ''sucks'' all the valuable substances out of its hosts. When it gets too big, the trees wither. It is as if their long life has entered the fungus called Chaga. Except for botanists, who have a name for it, Inonotus obliquus.
It has a hard texture, so it is traditionally processed into a powder added to drinks or made into tea. Why do this? Because those who consume Chaga can enjoy long health. It is not for nothing that the Chinese promoter Shen Nung Pen Ts'ao Ching (around 200 AD) referred to it as the "King of Herbs".
Siberian Chaga was already used in ancient Mesopotamia. There is even a suggestion that Ötzi the Ice Man, born around 3300 BC and found in 1991 in the Alps between Austria and Italy, died while carrying Chaga to a fire. Another reference is associated with the indigenous people of Russia, who drank its decoction during periods of fasting, used the mushroom in combination with lard as a natural soap, and sprinkled its ashes on sores.
The popularity of Chaga in Russia is not decreasing. Hunters and foresters use it to increase endurance. In the 1950s, the Moscow Medical Institute began researching it, and in 1955, the mushroom was recognized by the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences as a health-promoting agent.
