Benefits of cat's claw
If you say "Cat's claw", do not imagine a purring kitty. Cat's claw, so-called, harbours at least the strength of a tiger. Slowly, the whole world is beginning to worship this sacred herb of the ancient Incas.
Uncaria tomentosa sounds a bit like an incantation from a book about a little wizard, but it is the Latin name of this miraculous plant. Cat's claw is a climbing liana that grows in the rainforests of South America, mostly in Peru. It reaches up to 30 metres and gets its feline nickname from the distinctive hook sticking out from under the leaves.
The Cat's claw is used extensively in traditional folk medicine by the people of Peru and surrounding countries. It is most commonly used as an infusion or tincture. The gnarled inner bark containing a unique combination of alkaloids is chopped into small fibres and then dried. The decoction of the plant has a relatively bland taste and smell and is brownish-red in colour.
Long-term use of up to three cups per day is recommended. However, it is not suitable for pregnant and lactating women and young children.
Approved health benefits:
