Benefits of Carob
It is all "lose weight after Christmas" or "lose weight by Summer" all the time, but how do you do that when chocolate is so delicious? Simple, replace it with carob! Not only will you benefit your line, but you will do so much more for your health.
Cannot fit carob in? The information that it is the fruit of the carob tree probably will not be much help, but we are sure you have heard of it. A carob is a non-sprouting pod up to 30 centimetres long. When fully ripe, it has a dark brown colour and sweet flesh with large, hard seeds. It can be found throughout the Mediterranean, but also in parts of Africa, Australia and South and North America.
Its positive health benefits were already known to ancient Greeks, where the carob probably originated. However, it has also gained enormous popularity thanks to its delicious taste. It is not for nothing that it is said to be an excellent substitute for chocolate, or cocoa, to be exact. While cocoa is richer in iron and magnesium, carob takes a beating in terms of calcium. Carob also contains more fibre. Its flavour is milder and sweeter than cocoa, which is why it is commonly used in gastronomy.
You will often find carob syrups, flakes or fine powder. The latter is probably the most practical for use. There are plenty of recipes for smoothies or baked and unbaked desserts where you can enjoy its flavour.
Interestingly, carob does not contain theobromine found in cocoa. So you can safely treat your pets, for whom classic chocolate is dangerous, to a sweet carob treat.
