Guayusa has a golden infusion and a delicious, sweet taste with herbal notes.
Origins
Amazonia is not only the so-called lungs of the world, but also a reservoir of a plethora of plants beneficial to humans. One of them is undoubtedly guayusa, which you may also know as wayusa, huayusa or waisa. This evergreen tree of the holly genus is highly valued and protected in Ecuador. Its fresh or dried leaves are used to make a highly caffeinated drink reminiscent of the better known maté. Compared to that, however, it has a very pleasant and more delicate sweet taste.
The guayusa tree is mainly grown in the Ecuadorian provinces of Napo and Pastaza in the vicinity of national parks, but you can also find it in Colombia and Peru. These are mostly small family gardens that respect the harmony of tradition and nature. The emphasis is on an organic approach that takes full advantage of the richness of the surrounding landscape without any fertilizer or synthetics. The growers allow the leaves to grow for a minimum of 3-4 years, then harvest them by hand and carefully spread them out in the sun. This gentle processing gives guayusa its unmistakable aroma and taste.
For the indigenous people of Ecuador, drinking guayusa was a daily morning ritual that reliably invigorated the body and mind. The first records of its consumption date back an incredible 1,500 years. Legend has it that once upon a time, a shaman from the local Kichwa tribe prayed for a plant that would help his people dream and wake up. Then, during one of their hunting expeditions, the hunters stumbled upon guayusa. A brew made from its leaves helped them to stay fully concentrated for many hours without sleeping and without experiencing any signs of fatigue. In a different dosage, however, the drink allowed them to experience a state of deep meditation and visions of the future.
Guayusa is a treasure trove of a huge and scientifically supported health benefits. In addition to the high caffeine content, it has a large amount of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and other important elements. If you are looking for a natural alternative to coffee, green teas or the aforementioned yerba maté and insist on a delicate, slightly sweet taste, then guayusa will meet all these requirements.
