Origins
Schisandra chinensis is a vine-like plant found on the Asian continent especially in China, Russia, Japan, Mongolia and Korea. Because of its graceful appearance and unpretentiousness, however, it has become a popular decorative flower in many gardens across the temperate zone. Its red-colored fruit is particularly noticeable. The approximately 1cm big berries are edible, but have a very specific flavor when eaten raw.
The medicinal uses of the schisandra have been mentioned in ancient Chinese medical texts. The five flavors of schizandra are likened to the five elements. Sourness to wood, bitterness to fire, sweetness to earth, spiciness to metal and saltiness to water. All this symbolizes the plant's enormous power and its incredible versatility. In fact, in Chinese folk medicine, it is attributed with the ability to increase Qi, or life force and energy.
Schisandra is a perfect example of an adaptogen, which means that it contains substances that allow the body to better and more easily withstand adverse external conditions and stress. These properties were first reported by Russian scientists in the 1960s, opening the gateway to the world for the herb. There aren't many natural adaptogens, which is why, along with ginseng or curcumin, it was a sensation in Western medicine.
It's most often found on the market in powder form. Its uses are wide ranging. Apart from regular drinks and smoothies, you can also prepare a miracle tonic from it using cosmetic alcohol. You can even make schisandra hot cocoa, which also has a vegan version and is sure to win over many foodies. See if the ancient Chinese masters were right when they believed that schisandra could calm the heart and soothe the spirit, and be enchanted by the power of the five flavors.
