Cinnamon is cultivated mainly in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), but it is also grown in other parts of the tropics. It is the bark of evergreen cinnamon trees, which are harvested two to three years after they are planted. It is used in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, perfumery, medicine and cosmetics.
Passionfruit is native to America, Australia and Asia. It is a perennial vine with beautiful flowers. Its aromatic fruits are widely used in gastronomy and folk medicine.
Cardamom is native to India, but is also grown in Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Guatemala. Up to 4m tall, this herb has flat leaves and the fruit is a green capsule containing brownish-red seeds. They are used as a rare spice, one of the basic ingredients in Indian cuisine.
