Origins
This fresh black tea from the first harvest from the Badamtam Estate offers tea lovers an experience like no other. It comes from the heart of Darjeeling, India, from an altitude of 305-1,830m, where the tea gardens are managed by the followers of a lady named Christine Barnes.
Christine founded the Badamtam Estate in 1858. She chose the picturesque Lebong valley, located only about 17km from Darjeeling. It can be found near the Sikkim region, surrounded by the Rangeet and Majhitar rivers which provide natural irrigation and contribute to the rich microclimate. The combination of high altitude, constant humidity and clean air creates the ideal conditions for growing premium, fragrant tea leaves. The plantation's organic certification also contributes significantly to the fantastic properties of the local teas – it’s cultivated without the use of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides, so the environment doesn’t suffer the fallout of such harmful substances.
The Darjeeling area is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious tea regions in the world. It’s located on the slopes of the Himalayas in the Indian state of West Bengal, close to the borders with Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. Due to its geographical location and altitude between 600-2,000m, Darjeeling has a cooler and foggy climate with regular rainfall which significantly affects the flavor profile of the tea plants. The unique, unparalleled character of the teas is all thanks to the variation in temperature, amounts of sunshine and the humidity levels.
But Darjeeling is more than just a home to exceptional tea – it’s a place with a rich culture and history. The area is inhabited by different ethnic groups, especially Nepalese, Sikkimese, Bhutanese and Tibetans. Generations of locals have often worked on the tea plantations, bringing a deep understanding of traditional methods of growing and processing tea. Thanks to their work, Darjeeling teas continue to maintain such high quality. The city of Darjeeling itself also features colonial architecture, Buddhist monasteries and views of majestic Kanchenjunga, the 3rd highest mountain in the world.
You should also know that Darjeeling teas are protected with Geographical Indication – only teas grown and processed in the area and according to strict rules are allowed to carry the 'Darjeeling' logo. This protection ensures authenticity and high quality.
