Catuaba Tree Bark – Herb
Brazilians are known for their innate sensuality. Less known is their long-standing use of the bark of a local deciduous tree. Catuaba bark may be slightly bitter and woody, but this traditional drink of the Tupi tribe is undoubtedly worth a try. This unique herb, deeply woven into Brazilian culture and tradition, is an intriguing connection to the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest.
Ingredients
100 % CatuabaBrew & Taste
Do not expect any distinct taste. The decoction you make by simmering Catuaba is slightly woody and bitter, but dissolves into a sweet and mild herbal aftertaste. In the aroma, the woodiness predominates. The drink has a red-mahogany color.
Origins
Another wonder of the Brazilian rainforest is called Catuaba. But you can also find the herb under the names caramuru, katuaba, pau de reposta, tutuaba, or cataguá, piratancara, or angelim rose. In all cases, it is the bark of the Erythroxylum catuaba tree, which, incidentally, is related to the one used to produce cocaine. But do not worry. Erythroxylum catuaba contains no narcotic or addictive substances whatsoever. On the contrary, it has compounds that positively affect the body. Catuaba is also sometimes called red bark. It is tree bark, harvested only in thin layers, so it can grow back without endangering the whole tree, which is usually 2-5m tall and produces beautiful yellow to orange flowers. Its oval fruits of the same color are inedible.
Native Americans have used the bark for hundreds of years. The Tupi tribe, credited with the ""discovery"" of catuaba, is one of Brazil's most important indigenous peoples. Scientists say they settled in the Amazon rainforest more than 3,000 years ago. In the year 1500, their population counted 1 million people. Today, only a fraction remains. Apart from their cannibalistic rituals and intimate knowledge of the effects of Amazonian plants, what is also interesting about the Tupi is that they gave the world several words still in use today – for example, Arara (parrot) and Tucano (toucan). Catuaba has been included in many of their legends and has become part of their traditions.
