The South American ritual of sipping a drink made from the leaves of the Paraguayan holly calls for the friendly passing of one calabash to several people. The tea is sipped through a straw called a bombilla with a sieve at the end.
As calabash is a natural product, care must be taken to ensure its purity. It is recommended that the calabash is ''captured'' before it is filled for the first time. After each use, the gourd should be rinsed with clean water and allowed to dry well. According to tradition, it is advisable to sip Yerba Maté while sipping it. It is completely unacceptable to sprinkle sugar in the beverage or wait for the Maté to cool down.
