Origins
It is a well-known fact that black tea production in India is among the best in the world. This excellent Assam tea is quite popular thanks to its refreshing effects and sweet taste. It is strong and therefore loved by people with a physically or mentally demanding job.
A specific type of Camelia assamica tea tree with large leaves grows in the fields by the Brahmaputra River. The local area is perfect for this tree because of its humid and warm climate. The flat landscape allows the first harvest of tea leaves to be done in March and April, followed by a second harvest in May, which is usually more fruitful. The second 'flush' is sometimes referred to as 'Tippy Tea', after the large number of golden hairs (tips) on the leaves. Its taste is sweeter and fuller. Leaves of Camellia sinensis var. Assamica are dark green, glossy and wider than its Chinese varieties. Plucking tea bushes is often an activity for the women. They equip themselves with large bamboo baskets and strap them around their foreheads before heading out to the plantations early in the morning.
In the processing factories, the leaves are wilted and go through the fermentation process. The tea is laid out into thin layers so the enzymes oxidise under higher humidity and temperature. The chemical reaction enhances its color and flavor, and the strength and clarity of the tea depend on it. The black tea production ends in the drying room, where, under the strict supervision of the plantation manager, the leaves transforms into fragrant and delicious black tea.
Thanks to the labelling of the tea with the letters TFGOP1, you can distinguish it as Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, a tea of excellent quality with a high percentage of hairy shoots and a delicate, distinctive taste.
