Origins
The origins of the alfalfa herb can be found in Asia Minor and Central Asia. From there it spread to Europe. The botanical name alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a plant of the legume family, reaching a height of up to 90cm. This perennial herb is characterized by its upright stem, trifoliate leaves and dark purple flowers. The fruits, which are pods, contain flattened, light brown seeds. It has a very rich root system which enables it to withstand prolonged droughts. You will have seen alfalfa along paths, in clearings or field margins. Farmers grow it as a crop for livestock feed, but because it has the ability to improve the soil, it is also used as a so-called catch crop. It is certainly worth noting that in the year 2000, alfalfa was the most cultivated plant in the world. In 2006, global production was 436 million tonnes.
In Arab countries, it's known as a-fac-facah or al-fal-fa.
For those interested in history, it first spread from Asia to Greece in 490BC, when the Persians invaded Greek territory. Ancient Ayurvedic texts have already written about the effects of the seeds and sprouts. And cultivation was described by Ibn al-Awwam in the 12th century. In the 16th century, alfalfa reached America. Today, this herb is widespread not only in native Asia, but also in North America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and England.
Alfalfa is rich in chlorophyll, protein, calcium, B vitamins, vitamin C, D and E as well as vitamin K. Folk medicine uses it extensively to strengthen the body and to prevent a number of ailments.
