Origins
Yerba Mate is a traditional South American beverage made from the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis tree. The drink's popularity stems from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, where it has a long history and deep cultural significance. Its preparation and savoring are a true ritual worth trying. The dried and chopped leaves are covered with hot (not boiling) water, not in a teapot, but in a maté gourd – a container made from a hollowed-out fruit of the calabash tree. A metal straw, the so-called bombilla, is used for drinking.
The sipping of yerba mate tends to be long and leisurely. In many South American countries, it is common for people to share mate during social gatherings with friends and family. It's a symbol of hospitality and acceptance. All participants drink from one vessel and use one straw, creating a sense of belonging and togetherness.
Even outside South America, mate has become part of tea culture. You can get it in mate bars or specialty cafes. Yerba mate thus brings together not only generations but also people of different cultures and nationalities.
What else can it do? Besides a high content of stimulants such as caffeine or theobromine, it also contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It's a great partner for anyone who needs encouragement or relaxation with a clear mind.
