Origins
In this tea blend, we’ve combined ingredients from several continents. Figuratively speaking, we’ve journeyed to South American forests, Asian plantations, and European herb gardens to source them. Let’s take a look at at least three of them.
One of the most distinctive ingredients is yerba maté, the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis tree. It's an evergreen tree that grows up to 15 meters tall, with dark green, leathery leaves and small whitish flowers. It grows naturally in the subtropical regions of South America, primarily in Paraguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil. This is where the tradition of drinking maté originates from, a custom maintained by local inhabitants for centuries. The drink is prepared from dried leaves and sipped from a gourd using a metal straw called a bombilla.
Yerba maté leaves contain a variety of bioactive compounds such as:
- polyphenols,
- xanthines, primarily mateine, a caffeine-related compound,
- saponins,
- B vitamins,
- minerals (such as potassium or magnesium).
Thanks to these, yerba maté is associated with a number of positive health effects. It helps refresh the body, alleviates mental and physical fatigue, supports normal cardiovascular function, and also contributes to lipid metabolism and weight management.
The second key ingredient is echinacea, also known as purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). This perennial herb is native to North America, where it grows in prairies and sunny meadows. It grows to a height of about 1 meter and is easily recognizable thanks to its large pink-purple flowers with a distinctive spiky center. It is precisely the flowers and roots of the purple coneflower that have been used for centuries in the traditional medicine of Native Americans.
Echinacea contains a wide range of interesting compounds like:
- alkylamides,
- polysaccharides,
- flavonoids,
- caffeic acid and its derivatives (e.g., echinacoside),
- essential oils, and other phenolic compounds.
These substances are responsible for its reputation as an herb that supports the body’s natural defenses. Echinacea contributes to the normal function of the immune system, supports the proper function of the respiratory system, and also contributes to the normal functioning of the lower urinary tract.
The third important ingredient in the blend is true ginger (Zingiber officinale). It's a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia, though now it's cultivated in a number of warm regions across the world, such as India, China, and Sri Lanka. Ginger produces long, narrow leaves and inconspicuous flowers, but its most valuable part is the underground rootstalk, which has been used in cooking and traditional medicine for thousands of years.
Ginger rhizomes are rich in active compounds:
- gingerols and shogaols,
- essential oils,
- antioxidants,
- vitamins, and minerals.
These are the reasons ginger is associated with supporting normal digestion, natural immunity, and proper respiratory function. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system and helps maintain normal blood sugar levels.
These three distinctive ingredients are complemented by others – such as rosehip with its natural antioxidant content, acerola as a rich source of vitamin C, calendula with a delicate herbal flavor, and lemon peel, which gives the infusion a fresh citrus aroma. Together, they create a harmonious blend that combines traditional herbs from different corners of the world into a single balanced and invigorating tea.
