Origins
Tribulus terrestris Linné is an annual herb. The stems are 10-60 cm long but lie close to the ground. The small, deep yellow flowers appear from June to September, the leaves resemble those of acacia and are alternate, oddly pinnate. Tribulus are creeping plants, so it creates carpets close to the ground to cover large areas – in some languages, it’s even nicknamed a ‘carpet of vitality’. The fruit is a hard capsule divided into five spiny parts. The spines resemble small anchors, which is why it’s often called the caltrop plant.
It occurs naturally in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. It can be found along rivers, in gardens, on coastal sands, but also in steppes and semi-deserts.
Tribulus is grown and harvested for its flower buds, but the root, seeds, and flowers can also be used. When harvesting, the whole plant must be removed from the ground and the inflorescence is dried separately, crushed, and stored in a dry, shaded place. The herb has a long history and tradition – it’s been popular since the times of the ancient China, India, and even Mesopotamia. It’s an important part of Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicines.
