St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is an herb with small, golden-yellow flowers that appear from June to August, and its leaves have tiny translucent dots. It grows in meadows, hedgerows, and pastures throughout Europe. It has a beneficial effect on mental health, helps restore emotional balance, and also contributes to the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system.
St. John's wort contains:
- hypericin and pseudohypericin (red pigment),
- flavonoids (rutin, quercetin),
- tannins,
- essential oils,
- vitamins C and A.
You’re probably familiar with our next ingredient. Mistletoe (Viscum album) is an evergreen semi-parasitic plant that grows on trees (most often apple, poplar, or linden trees). It forms round bushes with leathery leaves and waxy white berries and you can find it all throughout Europe as well as in the temperate zones of Asia. Mistletoe is associated with supporting the immune system, thereby contributing to strengthening the body's natural defenses and overall resistance.
Mistletoe is rich in:
- lectins and viscotoxins,
- flavonoids,
- phenolic acids,
- resins,
- minerals (potassium, calcium).
Thirdly, let's take a closer look at the tree nicknamed the ‘living fossil’. Yes, we’re referring to Ginkgo biloba, characterized not only by its height of up to 30 meters, but also by its typical fan-shaped leaves. Although ginkgo originates from China, it’s now cultivated all over the world. Among other things, this plant is also known for its beneficial effects on blood circulation, thereby supporting proper peripheral circulatory system function, cognitive function, and memory.
Ginkgo leaves are valued primarily for their content of:
- ginkgolides and bilobalide (unique terpene lactones),
- flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin),
- proanthocyanidins,
- organic acids.
Last but not least, we need to mention nettle (Urtica dioica), a popular perennial plant with heart-shaped, serrated leaves covered with hairs that cause an unpleasant stinging sensation when touched. It grows abundantly throughout Europe and Asia in damp meadows and near human dwellings.
Nettle is a source of:
- chlorophyll,
- vitamins (C, K, B group),
- minerals (iron, calcium, potassium, silicon),
- flavonoids,
- tannins,
- formic acid (in stinging hairs).
