Origins
When you say tea, most people think of the signature dried leaves of Chinese tea plant, but fruit teas offer an experience that’s on an entirely different level – an experience that’s incredibly refreshing, full of juicy flavors and floral aromas. Don’t believe us? Then you’ve definitely haven’t tried the one we called Passion Fruit-Orange with Vitamin C. All of the ingredients were balanced to create one harmonious whole… but three of them deserve a special spotlight. Blood orange is the fruit of a citrus tree, namely Citrus sinensis var. sanguinea. It can reach up to 9m and has glossy, dark green leaves as well as fragrant white blooms. The fruit itself has orange to slightly red toned skin which hides a vibrant crimson pulp. The vibrant color is due to the anthocyanin content – a natural pigment that’s very rare in citrus fruits. To reach the distinct red hue, blood oranges need to ripen with cool nights, which is why they thrive in areas such as Sicily or Spain.
Blood orange peel contains:
- flavonoids (e.g., hesperidin, naringin),
- essential oils (esp. limonene),
- vitamin C,
- citric acid.
Passion fruit will lead us even further into the tropical zone – this juicy fruit by the Latin name of Passiflora edulis occurs on a fast-growing vine with leaf axils and amazing purple-white flowers reminiscent of decorative crowns. It’s round, with yellow or purple skin and a gelatinous pulp full of tiny black seeds. Passion fruit originated in South America, but nowadays it’s grown in almost all tropical and subtropical regions, from Brazil to Kenya to Indonesia.
Passion fruit is rich in:
- vitamins A & C,
- flavonoids (e.g., luteolin, apigenin),
- alkaloids (e.g., harman alkaloids),
- natural glucose.
To round up our trio, we’ll introduce hibiscus, Latin Hibiscus sabdariffa. Tea blends often employ its blooms – or rather, their calyxes, which surround the seeds after the flowers fade. Hibiscus is an annual plant which can grow up to 2.5m and has lobed, light green leaves and pinkish white flowers with a dark center. It originated in west Africa, though it’s cultivated in Sudan, Thailand, Mexico, and Egypt, where locals use it to brew a delicious beverage known as karkadeh.
Hibiscus contains:
- organic acids (citric acid, malic acid),
- anthocyanins,
- polyphenols,
- vitamin C.
