Origins
Mountain Herbs loose-leaf tea is pleasantly refreshing. In addition to mint, it also contains yerba mate, so let us share a few words about this South American treasure.
Mate is made from the leaves of the Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis), a tree that grows mainly in the Amazon rainforest. The abilities of its leaves were discovered by the Guarani tribe living in the southern parts of Brazil. They even began to cultivate the holly, which the Jesuit missionaries learned from them. It was thanks to them that the popularity of yerba mate spread to Europe and the Americas. The drink, which the indigenous people drank as a token of friendship from a hollowed-out gourd, is now available in many shapes and forms.
Yerba mate itself is made by fermenting and drying the leaves of the Paraguayan holly. They need to be harvested with the twigs, stuffed into large bags and left to ferment. When the fermentation is sufficient, the yerba mate undergoes a short heating. It is then dried, cut into smaller pieces, sorted and packaged.
Peppermint is an essential part of every herbalist's toolkit. It adds a refreshing "windiness". Mint is a perennial herb found in western Europe. It grows 50-80cm, has straight, hairy stems and ovate leaves. It can be safely identified by its signature peppermint scent.
Common mallow has a hairy stem and grows along roadsides and pastures across Europe. It blooms from June to October and contains polysaccharides that make it a must in traditional medicine.
