Origins
The Moringa oleifera tree is native to the southern foothills of the Himalayas. However, it is also widespread in India, Arabia, Africa and Madagascar. It needs a tropical or subtropical climate to grow, and tolerates poor sandy soil as well as nutrient-rich habitats. It grows extremely fast, second only to bamboo and up to 3m per year. In the wild it reaches 12m in height, and on farms the trees are kept as 1-2m high shrubs. The leaves are pinnate, up to 60cm long, elliptical. Like them, the white honey-scented flowers, pods, fruits and roots are utilized in their entirety. The bark of the moringa provides coarse fibers suitable for making ropes and mats. Moringa is considered a superfood because of its high nutritional value and wide application, as well as certain health benefits.
