Linden blossom infusion has a light yellow color and an extremely pleasant taste and aroma. It is neither bitter nor astringent, but slightly sweet, mild and smooth.
Origins
The linden tree (Tilia) is widespread throughout the temperate northern hemisphere. It includes about 40 species, including the large-leaved linden and the small-leaved linden (heart linden). The tree, which can live up to 600 years, is characterized by its dense crown, heart-shaped leaves and, of course, its fragrant flowers.
The linden tree can grow to a height of 30m or more, with a trunk covered in dark, thin bark. It blooms from June to July with yellow flowers. The scent of flowering linden tree can reach dozens of meters.
Linden tree is held in high esteem, especially by the Slavs. It is true, however, that it was also mentioned in the works of Virgil, Ovid and Pliny as "the golden tree". The ancient Slavs attributed it magical powers. It became a symbol of love and beauty named Lada. Rituals, important meetings, assemblies and sermons were often held under linden trees.
They were planted as a symbol of reconciliation or the end of conflicts. People believed that the linden tree would never be struck by lightning, that its bark protected against poisoning, and that its leaves could be used to gain immortality. A figure carved from linden wood also had a protective function, and was to be carried at all times.
The linden tree became the national tree of the Czech Republic in June 1848 at the All-Slavic Congress in Prague.
The linden tree is a tree valued not only for its flowers, but also for its easily worked wood with a beautiful pattern, or its bark, which is popular in basket-making.
Herbal medicine, however, is based on the first-mentioned linden flowers with foliage. They are collected before flowering, preferably in the afternoon. It is advisable to dry them quickly, in the shade, with good airflow. The temperature should not exceed 35⁰C.
