If you want to meet one of the oldest organisms on Earth, then horsetail is the one for you. Evidence of its existence dates back an incredible 359 million years to the Carboniferous Period. For example, it has witnessed the evolution of beetles and reptiles.
The horsetail, from the order Equisetum, is a perennial plant that reproduces by spores. It is a dark green herb without flowers and leaves with a branched rhizome. It grows worldwide except in Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica, so cou can easily come across it. They prefer humid environment, but can quickly establish themselves almost anywhere.
These plants have a variety of uses. Some of them can be used as a polishing agent, others as natural sponge. Poultices or baths made from the decoction are also great.
If you are going to collect the herb or buy the dried stems, keep in mind that there are poisonous species. While the risk of poisoning is actually minimal with careful use, you should always check which horsetail it is. The infusion from the aerial parts can be drunk in reasonable doses for up to 8 weeks, after which we advise a shorter break. Be careful with consumption if you suffer from a vitamin B1 deficiency, or if you are nursing or pregnant.
