Benefits of guayusa

Guayusa, wayusa or also Night watchman. These are all names for another of the many miraculous plants of the Amazon rainforest. The local Kichwa Indian tribe discovered the magical benefits of guayusa on the human body thousands of years ago, and a morning cup of a decoction of its leaves is still a daily ritual for most Ecuadorians.

The leaves of the Ilex Guayusa tree are used to prepare the Guayusa drink, which can be a bit like Yerba Maté. It is an evergreen tree of the holly family that can grow up to 30 metres high. It has large oval leaves, small white flowers and red fruits. It is found mainly in Ecuador but locally also in Peru and Colombia. Nowadays, it is grown specifically in rainforest gardens and is mainly found in the Ecuadorian provinces of Napo and Pastaza, an area of national parks and beautiful, pure nature.

As a result, the guayusa can be grown organically, obtaining everything it needs for its growth from the soil (without the addition of chemical fertilisers and other substances). The leaves are left to grow for at least three to four years before being harvested by hand. After harvesting, they are decomposed or hung to dry in direct sunlight.

The first surviving references to the abilities of guayusa come from a 1500-year-old tomb. The indigenous people used it not only as medicine but also as a quick source of energy on long hunting expeditions. Surprisingly, in addition to its stimulating side, it has a calming one. The Indians valued it as a tool for meditation and deep dreaming bordering on visions.

Guayusa can be classified as a caffeinated beverage. Unlike others, however, the energy released after consuming the decoction is gradual and long-lasting. That avoids the unpleasant conditions often associated with too much caffeine. The world of natural healing sees guayusa as a deep well of beneficial substances. It is rich in vitamins C and D and minerals (potassium, magnesium, calcium or zinc). Also of note are the stimulant theobromine, also found in cocoa beans, and the amino acids L-theanine and leucine. Guayusa is often compared to Yerba Mate (popular in neighbouring South American countries). However, its flavour is much more pleasant and sweet, and it is also perfect as a cold summer refreshment.
