Benefits of guarana
Finals are approaching, and students' guarana supplies are dwindling. After all, how many sleepless nights over work or textbooks has this plant made possible? And the "elixir of youth" (as the indigenous Amazonian people call it) does indeed resemble the bulging eyes of insomniacs.
Guarana is a mature shrub (or smaller tree) and is mainly cultivated in Brazil. However, it can also be found in Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.
It has small orange-red fruits that contain coffee-like seeds under the white flesh. When the fruit is ripe, it cracks open to reveal a dark brown seed. At that moment, the guarana does look like a cartoon human eye. That is confirmed by the legend of the ''divine child'' who was killed by a mighty serpent and from whose eyes this plant was born.
Due to its high caffeine content (reportedly up to four times more than coffee), guarana is widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. There are a large number of preparations and energy drinks on the market, but the traditional use of the plant is to grind the seeds into a fine powder. While this smells appealingly of cocoa, it does not offer the sweet taste of cocoa. However, the bitterness can easily be covered up in, for example, a fruit smoothie or yoghurt.
Due to the caffeine content, guarana is not recommended for children or pregnant and breastfeeding women. With adequate dosage, long-term use is possible.
