Origins
Fujian is considered near synonymous with green tea. This Chinese province with its mountains, valleys and coastline has made history not only for its fascinating geography and rich culture, but also the tradition of tea planting. Fujian lies on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and borders Zhejiang in the north, Jiangxi in the west and Guangdong in the south. Since ancient times, it has been an important trading hub and a major exporter of tea.
The climate of the province can be described as subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. High humidity and regular rain create ideal conditions for growing tea plants, while the mountains provide protection from excessively hot or cold weather spells. This is why Fujian teas excel in their delicate and layered flavors that are loved all around the world.
Green Snail Camellia is the perfect example of Fujian green tea. Grown in altitudes of around 1 100m, this tea is characterized by a cool and humid climate which support high-quality tea plant cultivation. The proximity to the ocean and the natural protection of the mountains contribute to air purity and the quality of the soil, giving tea unique flavor and aroma.
Tea plants are harvested by farmers in early spring. They pick only the youngest buds and tea leaves – careful selection is essential to maintain the best taste and quality of the tea. After harvest, they process the leaves immediately to minimize oxidation and preserve the freshness of the tea.
Specifically, Green Snail Camellia needs to be rolled by hand, very gently, into the characteristic spirals that resemble snail shells. You may be wondering why the shells. It's simple: rolling gives the tea both an attractive appearance and preserves the maximum of valuable substances. Thanks to this processing method, the tea has a light and fresh taste with a subtle sweet aftertaste that is reminiscent of the aroma and taste of camellias.
