Origins
This tea also appears under the name Jian Lu Cha. But no matter the name, it always makes for a delicious drink made from leaves full of silver tips. They are harvested from Chinese tea trees (Camellia sinensis), which are grown in several large tea gardens near Simao (Pu Erh City). Their full flavor and intoxicating aroma are influenced by the high altitude of 1600m, annual rainfall, soil conditions and the way they are grown, harvested and processed. Tea trees are planted in long rows by local family farms. They also harvest them by hand into large baskets. After the leaves have been steamed to stop fermentation, they are rolled, dried and sorted.
The terms used worldwide to distinguish the quality of tea leaves have no official standards. However, if the abbreviation FOP is found in the name of the tea, then it is the trade name for a quality tea containing shoots and the best first leaf. Flowery Orange Pekoe is one of the better leaf tea standards of all the world's plantations.
