Due to its popularity in folk medicine, verbena has many common names. Wherever the rumors of its magical abilities reached, local healers gave it a new name.
In botany, the herb is called verbena officinalis. It grows up to 50cm and has small, pinkish flowers. Usually, you can find it in sunny fields with plenty of moisture, most likely in the lowlands where the soil is fertile.
It used to be native to the areas around Mediterranean, west Africa and some regions of Asia, where it reached the Himalayas. From there, verbena spread further into Asia, Europe and Africa. Nowadays, you can also find it in North America and Australia.
As we already mentioned, it used to be an important part of magic rituals. Spiritual leaders in ancient Rome used it to dust the altars of the god Jupiter. What’s more, they believed it can be made into a spell to bring oneself love and peace. The Germanic peoples used to wear a sprig of verbena around their neck to banish evil and find love.
This herb is naturally rich in alkaloids, essential oils and enzymes. These are mostly concentrated in the above-ground part, which can be added into, for example, salads. However, it’s often dried and brewed to prepare a decoction.
Though there aren’t any proven side effects to usage of verbena, we recommend consuming it responsibly. If you use it long-term, take a break from it every two months.
