Origins
"Finally!" some would exclaim. Finally, an herb that's not only safe, but also beneficial for nursing women. A bag of dried galega should be carried by every new mom. Even it's name, Galega officinalis, is derived from the word "milk".
This perennial herb, which grows up to 1m, blooms with bell-shaped flowers of various colors. It prefers nutrient-rich soil, which is why it is easy to find in heathland, meadows and around rivers. It often forms intertwined plant colonies
It is native to the Middle East, but has been gradually spread throughout Europe, the American continent, and other Asian regions for its economic uses. It was a popular livestock feed – galega noticably increased milk production and was therefore an integral part of the feed mix, especially on farms where cheese was produced. Over time, however, this practice was abandoned, as the fresh leaves changed the taste of the milk and were rather harmful to the animals in the long term.
You can get rid of these negative properties by drying the leaves, which is why it remained popular to this day. The most well-known form of use is the preparation of an infusion. This is delicious on its own, but you will also find recommendations to combine it with cinnamon, ginger or fennel seeds. It is safe to consume in normal amounts, only people with diabetes and hematopoietic disorders such as anemia should consult their doctor beforehand.
