Origins
People have been seeking out herbs since the ancient times. Shamans, healers, prophets and healers have and will continue to be found all over the world. Always working with the gifts of nature they are surrounded by, they have helped their loved ones from many difficulties. It is no wonder, then, that they also focus their attention on helping new mothers and their offspring. The former are often troubled by lack of breast milk, healing pains or restlessness, while the latter struggle mainly with bloating or insomnia in the first weeks of life. It often takes several months to balance both worlds. To ensure that harmony and contentment come as soon as possible, generations of families have relied on tea made from lemon balm, fennel, fenugreek and other herbs.
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial plant, very common in central Europe, which grows to a maximum of 1.5m and whose leaves smell pleasantly of lemons when you rub them. They contain a number of essential oils, especially citral, citronellol and geraniol, which serve mainly as protection against herbivore grazing.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is found mainly in the Mediterranean. Both its leaves and fruits are used. The perennial herb resembles dill in appearance, but smells differently from it, and its fruit is a light brown achenes with a slightly spicy taste.
Third, let's mention fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), an annual herb that grows along fennel. It is mainly cultivated for eating, but its seeds are often used as a spice.
