Origins
Do you really know everything about coconuts? Let's talk a little more about this essential ingredient in the Coconut-Rum Symphony fruit tea.
Coconuts are the fruits of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). They‘re known for their high nutritional value and diverse uses. The fruit originated in Indonesia, most likely from the Sunda Islands, and has been spread to many parts of the world. And quite naturally, too. It has crossed oceans and seas thanks to its ability to float on water.
Coconut palms thrive in tropical climates with adequate rain. If the conditions are suitable, the coconuts take root. New plants usually bear fruit after 3 years. The largest producers of coconuts are Indonesia, the Philippines and India, which together harvest around 70% of the world's total production. Other major producers include Sri Lanka, Brazil, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar, Mexico and Thailand.
There are 3 main varieties of coconut palms: Tall, Dwarf and Hybrid. Tall palms have a longer lifespan, while Dwarf palms start fruiting earlier but don’t last as long. Hybrid palms are hybrids that generally have higher yields and better harvest quality.
Coconuts have a high nutrition value. Their parts are used in various culinary and industrial ways. Coconut flesh is rich in fiber and healthy fats, while coconut water is known for its moisturizing properties. Coconut oil and butter are often used in cooking and baking, but also in the cosmetics industry. Coconut flour is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. The so-called copra – the ground and dried skin of the coconut – is very well known and popular. The coconut husk can be used to make coir, a textile fiber with excellent insulating properties.

Of course, the apples in the tea are also worth mentioning. An apple is a round, edible fruit. It’s the fruit of the apple tree (Malus domestica) grown all over the world. Their origin can be found in Central Asia, however, they’ve also been cultivated in Europe for thousands of years. They’re rich in vitamins A, B6, C, E and K. They also contain minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and potassium.
And let's not forget cinnamon, the aromatic bark of evergreen tropical trees from the Lauraceae family. The most important varieties in terms of production are the Ceylon cinnamon tree, native to Sri Lanka, and the Chinese cinnamon tree, which native to Burma also grows in southern China, Thailand and Indonesia. Cinnamon contains valuable substances such as cinnamaldehyde, which gives it its characteristic aroma and flavor, and is known for its positive effects on digestion and overall refreshment.
