Origins
Gunpowder (Zhu Cha) is a traditional form of Chinese green tea rolled into tiny pearls. It may have got its name from an inattentive English clerk who mistook the tea for gunpowder while looking into a box of small beads. The first documented references to gunpowder date back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), but it did not cross the borders of China until the 19th century, when it was introduced to Taiwan.
Gunpowder is produced by the tea gardens of Zhejiang Province, which are situated on the hillsides of the local hills. The eastern Chinese province has a humid subtropical climate, with high temperatures and frequent rainfall in Zhejiang from June to September, dry autumn and short cold winters.
You can easily tell the quality of gunpowder. The shinier the tea leaves are, the fresher the tea. Tiny beads, on the other hand, are indicative of higher quality. The highest quality gunpowder has small, tightly rolled beads. In the case of China Gunpowder 1st Grade Organic, the origin of the tea also underlines its uniqueness. The tea bushes of the China Gunpowder (Camellia sinensis) have been grown without the use of industrial treatments and fertilizers. Thanks to the organic farming method, the tea does not contain any harmful substances.
