Brew & Taste

China Fine Oolong has an attractive amber color and an unforgettable impression from the first sip. It has a sweet, floral taste and captivates you with an attractive aroma. It does not deny the quality of Chinese green tea, so you will find a pleasant natural undertone in it.

Origins

When people mention China and tea, they usually follow up with Fujian. The province on the southeast coast of China has been associated with tea for at least 2,000 years, when it travelled alongside silk, sugar and paper through the famous Silk Road. Historians say that people exported it to Russia through Mongolia, which took several long months. Not surprisingly, the largest Sino-Mongolian trading company at the time employed 7,000 workers and used 20,000 camels. Each camel carried a load of 180kg of tea! Much later, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Fujianese tea leaf processors came up with a new way of producing tea – they only partially oxidized the tea called Wulong (oolong). This created a new, unique taste and aroma, and oolongs quickly found their way around the world.

Fujian is considered one of the most innovative and developed provinces in China regarding tea. The subtropical climate, the seasonal summer rains, and the dry winters allow tea bushes to grow leaves full of a rich aroma. The region is said to be made up of "8 parts mountain, 1 part water, and 1 part soil". In the north, there are mountains with an altitude of up to 2,000m. Below them lies the Anxi district, from which we brought this China Fine Oolong.

This tea is made of the shrubs of the Chinese tea tree (Camellia sinensis) cultivar which combines the Hairy Crab and Tie Kuan Yin species. The former is typical of Anxi County gardens. The name refers to the hairs that can be seen on the tea leaves. It has a thick, sweet taste and is considered one of the best. On the other hand, the Tie Kuan Yin variety is more floral and has a delicate aroma. But it also comes from Anxi County.

Oolongs offer a wide range of flavors and aromas, depending on where they come from and how they are processed. The degree of fermentation is crucial. You will find oolongs on the market fermented less than20 %, 20-40%, and 50-70%. The production involves a short withering of the plucked leaves, a slight bruising, and repeated tossing of the tea in woven baskets, which is completed by rapid heating. Finally, the oolongs are shaped and dried.
