Origins
Bancha is a tea traditionally produced in Japan. But its Chinese version made using Japanese process deserves similar attention. Its taste is truly top-notch and its low caffeine content makes it a companion for a long day.
China Bancha Premium comes from Zhejiang province. The area famous for its tea plantations is located on the east coast of China. Most of it is covered by hills, the climate is subtropical, with an average annual temperature between 15-18⁰C.
Zhejiang Province is one of China's largest tea producers. It exports mostly green teas, and to a lesser extent black teas. If you are wondering about the exact location of the plantations from which this tea comes, it is the area around Qiandao Hu. The site, linked to the large, man-made Qiandao Lake, is a huge tourist attraction. The body of water was created in 1959 in conjunction with the construction of the New Anjiang Hydroelectric Power Station.
In addition to exploring more than a thousand islands and islets, visitors also enjoy trekking in the surrounding forests or touring tea plantations. Those interested can attend a tea ceremony or a tasting of the local fine teas.
The tea leaves for making bancha are harvested later in the season. This is because the lower leaves, which don't get as much sunlight, are used. After they are wilted, they are steamed quickly and several times in succession to stop the natural oxidation of the enzymes. The tea then needs to be rolled, dried, sorted and packaged.
