Origins
If you're at all familiar with tea, you've probably heard about Assam. But we believe that those who have not had any experience with the teas from North East India will be interested in Assam Second Flush BOP Corramore. So here is a brief description of the region from where around 680,000 tonnes of excellent tea goes out into the world every year.
One of India's states named Assam can be found on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Most of the territory is lowland, but high mountains lie in the north and east of this region. In addition to the many monuments, national parks and forests also attract visitors. Assam's long history includes Stone Age settlements or great kingdoms ruled by powerful dynasties, British colonization and attempts to separate the state from India.
Assam's climate is tropical and whipped by monsoons, with summer temperatures of 35-38⁰C and winter temperatures of 6-8⁰C. Heavy rainfall and high humidity are common. In addition to tea trees (incidentally, a specific variety of Camellia sinensis var. assamica), people in the area focus on growing rice, sugar cane, turmeric, bamboo and jute.
Assam is also a world supplier of silk and oil. But back to tea. Its flavor is shaped by greenhouse conditions, soil conditions and the time of harvest and processing. For the first time, workers go to the plantations very early in the spring. The second harvest is made from leaves picked between May and June. This is followed by the so-called summer harvest (July-September), and the season ends with the autumn harvest (October-November). Teas from the second harvest, called Second Flush, are particularly revered.
They have full and mild malty flavor. The BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe) abbreviation in the name of this tea refers to a broken tea giving a strong infusion. Corramore tea garden is approximately 450 hectares in size, from which the tea originates. It is located in the Darrang district near Bhutan.
