Origins
When you pour Zen Energy into your favorite mug, remember that it connects four corners of the world – Japan, Peru, China, and tropical Asia. The ingredients we’ve selected not only have a unique taste, but also a rich history and a stable place in traditional cultures. Let's take a look at where they come from and what they bring to the drink.
Organic Matcha Hana has become an integral part of culture and rituals (not only) in Japan. It’s a symbol of focus and harmony, or more formally, a powder made from the leaves of tea plants (Camellia sinensis), which farmers cover with mats several weeks before harvest to encourage plentiful production of chlorophyll and beneficial amino acids. The leaves are then gently dried and ground by hand on granite stones. The result is a very fine powder with an intense color, creamy texture, and rich flavor.
Matcha is rich in:
- antioxidants (catechins),
- L-theanine,
- caffeine,
- vitamins A, C, E,
- minerals (potassium, calcium).
The second ingredient is maca (Lepidium meyenii). It’s the root of a plant found high in the Peruvian Andes, in inhospitable conditions where only a few select crops thrive. The indigenous people have been growing and consuming it for centuries. It looks like a small, fleshy tuber resembling a beet. When dried and ground, it has a delicate malty flavor.
Maca contains:
- phytoestrogens,
- amino acids,
- minerals (iron, copper, zinc),
- B vitamins,
- fiber.
Cordyceps sinensis, a fungus found in the high mountain regions of Tibet and China, where it parasitizes butterfly larvae, is also extremely interesting. Today, it’s cultivated ethically and ecologically under controlled conditions. In China, cordyceps used to be available only to the imperial court because it was said to guarantee vitality and longevity. It has a delicate mushroom flavor with a slightly sweet undertone.
Cordyceps is notable for its content of:
- adenosine,
- cordycepin,
- polysaccharides (glucans, mannans),
- phytosterols,
- essential amino acids,
- unsaturated fatty acids.
And let’s not forget to mention ginger (Zingiber officinale), which is one of the most famous spices in the world. The ginger rhizome, sprawling and light brown, hides a fibrous yellow pulp with a sharp aroma and taste. The plant originates from Southeast Asia and is now cultivated in India, China, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, among other places. Since ancient times, ginger has been associated with supporting digestion, the immune system, and having a stimulating effect.
Ginger contains:
- gingerols and shogaols,
- essential oils,
- vitamins C and B6,
- minerals (magnesium, potassium, manganese).
