Origins
Yerba Mate Sport combines plants from different corners of the world that people have used for centuries to boost energy, vitality, and bodily balance. Some come from the tropical regions of South America, others from the cooler parts of Asia or the European countryside. Together, they create a blend that naturally complements an active lifestyle. Let’s take a closer look at the four key ingredients.
The base of the blend is yerba maté; in other words, the leaves of the Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis). This evergreen tree grows up to 15 meters tall, has dark green leathery leaves, and small white flowers. It grows naturally in the subtropical regions of South America, primarily in Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. After the leaves are harvested, they're briefly heated over a fire and then dried and ground. It was the choice drink for the native Guaraní tribe during workdays and social gatherings. Yerba maté is valued not only for its characteristic stimulating effect but also as an antioxidant. Additionally, it supports normal cardiovascular function and helps refresh the body. It's also associated with reducing mental and physical fatigue and may contribute to weight management and lipid metabolism.
Yerba maté contains, for example:
- xanthine alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine),
- polyphenols,
- flavonoids,
- saponins,
- B vitamins,
- minerals (potassium, magnesium).
The second prominent ingredient in the blend is guarana. The tropical vine Paullinia cupana, native to the Amazon rainforests of Brazil, produces striking red fruits that burst open when ripe, revealing a black seed surrounded by white pulp. It is these seeds that are dried and ground into a powder known as guarana. Thanks to its high caffeine content, it's one of the best-known natural sources of energy associated with supporting physical and mental vitality. It also helps reduce fatigue and can provide the body with the necessary energy during demanding days. Additionally, it's also been cited in connection with supporting the immune system, normal digestion, and weight management.
Among other things, Guarana seeds contain:
- caffeine (guaranine),
- theobromine and theophylline,
- catechins,
- tannins.
The energizing nature of the blend is also enhanced by Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus): a shrub native to Eastern Siberia, northern China, and Korea. It grows to approximately 2 to 3 meters in height, has palmate compound leaves, and small dark berries. In Eastern medicine, the main part of the plant is the root, which is also considered an adaptogen. Siberian ginseng is associated with supporting physical and mental health and the body’s ability to better cope with stress. It contributes to normal cognitive and mental performance, supports blood circulation, and is also mentioned in connection with natural immune function. What's more, it also acts as an antioxidant.
Siberian ginseng root contains primarily:
- eleutherosides,
- lignans,
- polysaccharides,
- flavonoids,
- coumarins.
The fourth important ingredient is stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), a plant well known in European nature. It grows in meadows, along roadsides, or on the edges of forests throughout nearly the entire temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows up to 1.5 meters tall, and its leaves are covered with tiny stinging hairs. Although many consider it a common weed, stinging nettle is among the most nutritionally rich herbs in nature. It's traditionally associated with supporting vitality, the body’s natural defenses, and normal cardiovascular function. It also contributes to normal kidney function and the excretion of water from the body, and is mentioned in connection with maintaining the normal condition of bones, hair, and nails.
Nettles contain, for example:
- chlorophyll,
- flavonoids (such as quercetin),
- organic acids,
- minerals (iron, calcium, silicon),
- vitamins C and K.
