Yerba Mate Naranja with Lapacho
Anyone who speaks a little Spanish already knows what this maté tastes like. Naranja is an orange. The juicy, sweet citrus fruit adds a refreshing note to this earthy drink and faint tones of vanilla and sweet lapacho also add a pleasant undertone. Mate Naranja is one of the classics that most South Americans reach for several times a week. Try it too!
Ingredients
88 % Yerba Mate, 6 % Lapacho Matto Grosso, Orange peel, LemongrassBrew & Taste
Yerba Mate Naranja is delicious. The citrus flavor and aroma beautifully envelops the maté's light earthiness and smokiness. We've also added lapacho bark to the mix, which itself tastes sweet and slightly vanilla-like. The bright yellow tea is thus pleasantly interesting, novel and refreshing as a result.
Origins
We can probably imagine what it looks like in Brazil. But it might be worth remembering what it looks like on the plantations where the Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis) grows. In fact, they are the source of Brazil's national drink, maté.
Hollies are evergreen trees that grow up to 8m. Yerba maté is usually harvested from the genera Ilex paraguariensis, angustifolia and amara. In South America alone, there are 60 similar species, and as many as 550 worldwide. Due to the diversity of nature, they have thick waxy leaves with smooth or serrated edges and white or light purple stems.
The main factor affecting the taste and aroma of maté is the amount of sunlight that reaches the leaves. In the dense subtropical forest, where every plant fights for light, we find trees with long slender trunks and large leaves at their top. Farmers create the same conditions on their plantations, but they deliberately shade and prune the trees to keep them bush-sized.
Weeds are a major problem for the planters. The use of herbicides would have a major impact on the mate and threaten the ecological balance of subtropical forests. That is why the vast majority of growers avoid them. Instead, they take advantage of natural conditions and grow hollies surrounded by native forests. This keeps the amount of weeds to a minimum.
Let's briefly mention a few more reasons for the popularity of yerba maté. Native Americans used it to battle mental and physical fatigue. Mate supports proper digestive function and immunity. Its effects have been studied by a number of scientific teams.
Lapacho can be described in a similar way. The inner bark of the evergreen tree native to Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay is recommended by traditional folk medicine to support mental well-being, boost immunity, aid digestion and fight off infections or mycoses.
