Origins
It might seem that there’s mostly vanilla this tea. But the opposite is true. This spice needs to be handled with care, so we didn't skimp, but neither did we waste. The tea contains just enough for it to bring out the flavor and aroma of the other ingredients.
The spice, which was already familiar to the Toltecs and Aztecs, was brought to Europe in the first half of the 16th century. Vanilla beans as we know them have come a long way. And that’s not just in terms of distance.
The flowers of the vanilla orchid, now grown in Madagascar, Tahiti, Ceylon and the Seychelles, are pollinated by endemic bees and some species of hummingbird. It has therefore taken a long time successfully cultivate and vanilla anywhere other than in south-eastern Mexico, where it’s native. The discovery of artificial pollination has skyrocketed world production and allowed vanilla to spread beyond Mexico.
The beans are harvested about six months after flowering and are processed either the wet or the dry way. In both, fermentation, ripening and drying play a role.
Vanilla was used by indigenous tribes as a tool for overall harmonization of the body. Today we know that it contains B vitamins, omega acids, as well as potassium, phosphorus and sodium.
