Sweet Flag Root (Acorus Calamus) – Herb
You can find sweet flag in a pond or a lake, but also in any herb handbook or a medicinal cabinet of a folk healer. The last one is mostly due to its high content of beneficial nutrients which support your memory, digestion and general mental and physical well-being. It's a little bitter, but the essential oils, terpenes and tannins can do great things for you.

Sweet flag has a milky, bitter taste with a fresh citrus-floral aroma.
Origins
The word "sweet" in sweet flag is most likely due to the intoxicating sweet smell of its leaves when they are plucked, which gets even stronger when they are dried.
Acorus calamus is a perennial herb that grows up to 150cm. Its leaves are very long and slender, while the tiny flowers are arranged in an elongated shape resembling an ear. It does not produce fruit; only its American relative can.
It likes soil with plenty of moisture, so it is typically found near swamps, streams and other bodies of water. Here it is a favorite food of rodents, but also of ducks. However, people have long since discovered the magical powers of the plant's root. It has been a common ingredient in all kinds of love potions, but it has also been added to various alcoholic beverages because of its distinctive taste.
The rootstalk is nutritionally very rich and can also be used to extract an essential oil that is important for the cosmetics industry, for example. The dried and chopped root is used to prepare tea.
Unfortunately, it is not suitable for pregnant and nursing women. People with low blood pressure and heart problems should consult their doctor before use.
