Ingredients
95 % Black tea China Keemun Congu, BergamotBrew & Taste
Royal Earl Grey tea has a dark, brownish-red infusion with a strong bergamot smell. The natural essential oils beautifully complement the traditional black China Keemun resulting in a sweet, highly fragrant and faintly orchid-like composition.
Origins
The Chinese Keemun that gives Royal Earl Grey's base was harvested in Jiangxi province. Thanks to the subtropical climate and humid summers the Chinese tea plant (Camellia sinensis) thrives there.
Keemun has a relatively short history. It was first produced in 1875 as an experiment by a civil servant, Yu Quianchen, who went to Fujian to learn the secrets of tea production there. The results exceeded his expectations, and Keemun has quickly taken over the English market, where it became part of traditional breakfast tea blends.
The tiny tea leaves for China Keemun are harvested in the hills in late April or early May. Workers spread them out and let them wilt, then roll them by hand. During this step, the texture of the tea is disturbed and the juice is released. That increases the moisture between the leaves and starts the natural oxidation of the enzymes. It is, of course, a controlled and closely supervized process. The temperature of the fermentation process, the humidity and the length of time it takes are monitored. When the tea reaches the desired flavor and aroma, it is dried on a pan or with hot air.
Royal Earl Grey is made by adding bergamot essential oil to China Keemun tea. It is an essential oil extracted from a lemon-like fruit. Bergamot is used in cosmetics and to flavor teas.
