Origins
This vine with the Latin name Mucuna pruriens can be seen mainly in tropical areas, especially in the Caribbean as well as parts of China, India and Africa. It has both agricultural and horticultural value, which is why it is sought after by people all over the world.
It is a plant reaching up to 15m, with trifoliate, ovate or rhombic leaves. Young specimens are covered with stinging hairs; older plants lose them. The flowers are white or pinkish to purple and develop into pods 4-13cm long. Each pod (very hairy, by the way), contains a maximum of 7 flattened seeds.
Mucuna pruriens pods are divided into two types: hairy and smooth. The former can cause allergic reactions when it comes into contact with skin.
The beans can be used in a variety of ways. Some traditional communities believe in their ability to neutralize snake bites, elsewhere they are part of tantric rituals or to ward off evil spirits. In Mozambique they are called crazy beans, in Nigeria they are called devil beans because of their stinging hairs. Roasted and ground beans are used in Central America in a similar way to coffee.
