Ingredients
100 % Moringa powdered leaves BIOBrew & Taste
Moringa powder is suitable for herbal brews, smoothies, soups, sauces and other dishes. Its great advantage is that it does not alter the original taste of food in any way, as it is very mild and slightly sweet. When covered with hot water, it produces a pale yellow, slightly sweet-smelling brine.
Origins
Moringa oleifera trees originated in the Himalayas, but are now also grown in India, Africa and Madagascar. According to the Permaculture Research Institute, they are highly resistant plants that can grow in extremely dry areas and can even tolerate soil depleted by long-term agricultural activity. This, and the nutritional benefits of moringa, make the exotic tree literally the plant of the future.
What does moringa actually look like? In its natural state, it is a tree with a maximum height of 12m, a thinner crown and long leaves. It produces white-yellow flowers which develop into fruit over a period of about 3 months. They resemble 20-60cm long tubes. They are green at first, turning brown as they ripen. They contain about 20 oily seeds.
For commercial purposes, moringa is usually kept as a low shrub. The bark can be woven into fibres suitable for making ropes, and the roots are eaten as a substitute for horseradish. The flowers have a pleasant sweet scent and can be used to make soups and sauces. Similarly, moringa fruits are prepared like beans while still unripe. When their seeds ripen, they can be eaten like nuts. Interestingly, they can also be crushed and used to purify water. This is because they have the ability to coagulate some pollutants.
The biggest demand is for moringa leaves. They can be eaten raw, dried or cooked. They can also be ground into a fine powder and added to a variety of dishes, made into a drink or served as an herbal beverage.
