Ingredients
Anise, Fennel, CarawayBrew & Taste
Very pleasant scent and a delicate flavor. That's how a happy father might describe the Herbal Blend for Nursing Mothers. This tea is truly delicious. The sweet element of aniseed and fennel comes through in the taste, but also their subtle pepperiness. The infusion is pale yellow and aromatic.
Origins
We purchase all three ingredients from a verified European supplier. But it's certainly worth reminding ourselves of their true origins.
Anise refers to the fruit of the aniseed tree, an annual plant from the Mediterranean and Asia. It grows to about 150cm, has branching stems and blooms white. It prefers to grow in sunny places and the whole plant is fragrant. Anise hyssop has been popular in herbalism since the Middle Ages, when it was said to ward off plague. Today it is also grown in our country, but more often in Spain, Turkey, India and Mexico. It flowers from June to August, the fruits are collected from August to September, left to ripen and dried spread out in thin layers. Anise is a very popular spice, added to baked goods in the Balkans, and used in Indian and Chinese cuisine.
Fennel is a biennial plant similar to dill. It can be found wild in the Mediterranean, Asia, but also in central Europe. The plant can grow up to 2m, has a straight, finely grooved stem, and flowers yellow. The fruits are lighter, but about the same size as caraway. Fennel seeds are collected in the second year, 2-3 times, during the second half of summer and early morning. They are dried with the whole clusters, after which they are so called dropped. Fennel has also been a popular herb for thousands of years. It is used not only for decoctions, but also to make lotions, hair wash products, extracts are added to toothpastes, soaps and so on. Fennel is often used in Provençal cuisine in the preparation of dishes, it is also added to confectionery and bakery products and its aroma can be detected in many liqueurs.
Cumin, a popular, fragrant spice, is grown throughout central and northern Europe, Siberia and Asia. It is the oldest spice ever, and was once considered to repel evil spells. The cumin plant is biennial, sometimes perennial, grows up to 1m, flowers white and the fruit is harvested in late June to early July. It is best dried on grates.
