Benefits of Schizandra
You may have seen it in our parks and gardens climbing walls and balustrades. The Asian beauty is known for its bright red fruit, which is not only a decoration but also a source of many beneficial substances, thus earning it a prominent position in natural healing.
Magnolia, schizandra or officially Schisandra chinensis. These are all names for a liana-like plant with origins in East Asia. In China, for example, the first references to the healing powers of schizandra are over 2000 years old, and the plant is still one of the mainstays of traditional medicine here.
Its berries are known as the five-flavour fruit because they combine sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness and astringency. That is of great importance to Chinese medicine. They consider that each of the flavours affects a different part of the body, so for them, schizandra is a symbol of versatility and, most importantly, it can awaken Qi, life force and energy.
In the 1960s, Russian scientists discovered that Schisandra chinensis is a perfect example of an adaptogen - a natural substance that can help the body cope with harmful environmental influences and unwanted stress. Thus, it is among the more well-known plants in the Western world with this ability, such as the box-thorns or ginseng. The most talked about compounds behind its abilities are schisandrin and gomisin A, but they also contain many vitamins.
Almost the entire plant can be used. Most often, you will come across fruits which are edible on their own, but their specific flavour often discourages direct consumption. However, if dried and ground, then even a simple mixing of the powder with pure water will produce a refreshing drink. It is also popularly used to make tonic water using cosmetic alcohol. Schizandra can be used in reasonable dosage for a long time. However, it is not suitable for pregnant women, and some studies recommend prior medical consultation for people suffering from epilepsy.
