Benefits of liquorice
Perhaps they wanted to give Tutankhamun a treat on his last journey. Perhaps they were thinking of his condition on the other side. We will never know, but the sweet root, as liquorice is called, was indeed found in his tomb.
Liquorice has a hard-to-pronounce Latin name - Glycyrrhiza glabra, which means sweet root. Glycyrrhizin is the key ingredient in liquorice. It is approximately 50 times sweeter than sugar and a double-edged sword. It provides many benefits to our bodies, but in larger quantities, it can be toxic. You may come across a so-called de-glycyrrhizin version of liquorice extract, but this is not as effective.
The herb originally came from the Mediterranean region, but you can also find records of it on Egyptian papyrus and Assyrian clay tablets. Gradually, it spread to other parts of the world, and you can also find it in our country.
Many people associate liquorice with the popular colourful sticks, but nowadays, sweets are more likely to be made by adding aniseed extract, the taste of which is similar. A decoction of the root of the plant is slightly pungent and strongly aromatic. It should be avoided by pregnant women and generally consumed sparingly and not over a long time.
