Benefits of Kiwi

It used to be called Chinese gooseberry, but today, we would look for it under that name in vain. The green, oval and hairy kiwi got its name in 1974. The inspiration for marketers was indeed New Zealand's flightless kiwi bird.

You know what the popular fruit looks like. It is a bit like a hen's egg in size and shape. Its thin skin is often brown, and the green flesh contains plenty of small, black seeds. Kiwi is the fruit of Actinidia deliciosa, a liana native to China which grows up to 9 metres. The youngest shoots are red, and the older ones are brown. What is interesting is the speed at which the actinidia "grows" - up to 5 centimetres per day!

The liana usually flowers yellow-orange. Its pollination is provided by insects or wind. The berries that bear fruit are initially densely covered with hairs that can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth when eaten. A single plant can produce up to 25 kilograms of fruit.

Some sources consider kiwifruit to be a superfood. It contains vitamins C, E and B and minerals such as phosphorus, iron, potassium and copper. There is enough of the latter in one fruit to cover 14 % of the recommended daily allowance.
